The United Nations Secretary-General says it’s time for the parties in Ethiopia to recognise that there’s no military solution to the conflict. Antonio Guterres says it has become vital to preserve the unity and stability of the country and the region. Guterres was addressing the media in New York, a week after the Ethiopian government called on all capable citizens to join the military to stop resurgent forces from the Tigray region – essentially ending a unilateral ceasefire declared by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in June.
The UN complained this week that humanitarian access to Tigray remained unpredictable and volatile as Tigrayan advances into the southern provinces of Amhara and Afar continued to raise alarm.
